Data hacking is nothing new but historical evidence shows that the rate, extent and innovativeness increases during the time of crises. During COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals and corporations are showing true compassion and helping each other with manufacturing and donating medical supplies, donating food to the needy and helping their communities as much as possible.

On the other hand cyber criminals are trying to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic. The FBI has warned the three states in the US namely – New York, California and Washington (that have the maximum number of COVID-19 cases) need to be on high alert particularly to the cyber-attach threat.

FBI has revealed two important points in their analysis of the current cyber-attack threat. Firstly that "virtually all" of the coronavirus-related cyber-attacks against the U.S. are originating from cybercriminals outside of the U.S. itself. Secondly, and more importantly, that the spike has been driven by cyber-attacks targeted as those areas of the U.S. that have the highest COVID-19 infection rates.

Some government organizations in the US had to prepare hundreds of their employees to work remotely, which they have never done before. In some cases, some employees use their personal devices to work that do not have proper antivirus protection or their home network is not secure enough.

People should be aware of wide variety of devices connected to home networks, which could include smart thermostats, gaming consoles, baby monitors, TVs, appliances and possibly even cars.

The FBI has warned that scammers are offering such items such as free COVID-19 testing kits and guaranteed anti-virus air duct cleaning services to residents via telephone and the Internet. The FBI said cyber scamming efforts have doubled in the past couple of weeks.

The number of phishing emails especially linked to COVID-19, Lockdown, Work From Home (WFH), Products & solutions for COVID 19, targeted on end-users has gone up dramatically. Compared to last week overall numbers are up by 50 percent and COVID-19 related more than 200 percent.
